In 2025, 0.37% of the population in Switzerland aged 18 to retirement age were newly granted an invalidity insurance (IV/AI) pension due to illness, corresponding to 20 846 people. Overall, around 194 000 people receive an IV/AI pension due to illness in 2025 (number not shown).

Within the illness-related IV/AI pensions, mental illness was causally involved in more than half of the cases (2025: 0.20%).

The share of new IV/AI pensions due to illness reached its highest value in 2003 (0,53%). Although this value had halved by 2015 (0,23%), it has since been rising again. The trend in new pensions is influenced by various IV/AI revisions as well as other factors (see definition).

This indicator is part of the Monitoring System Addiction and NCD (MonAM) of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).

Non-communicable diseases can lead to disability and premature exit from working life. This implies costs for the State, the economy, the individual and the healthcare system. This indicator shows the percentage of new IV/AI pensions allocated each year by different illnesses (mental illness, nervous system, bone and musculoskeletal and other diseases).

The indicator allows estimates to be made of the illness-related disability risk of different population groups.

Definition

IV/AI pensions = Invalidity insurance pensions

This indicator was calculated on the basis of data from the Invalidity Insurance Statistics (IV/AI statistics).

It shows the percentage of the permanent resident population (age: 18–Retirement age) receiving a new IV/AI pension due to illness. However, IV/AI pensions may also be granted due to congenital disorders or accidents, which are not considered in this indicator.

The cause of illness is divided into four sub-categories:

  • mental illness
  • nervous system
  • bone and musculoskeletal
  • other diseases
